Q&A With Marketing & Campus Relations Team Member: Summer

Q: What do you do at BCA Study Abroad? What is your favorite part of your job?

A: As the Design & Media Specialist, I am in charge of BCA’s print, web and social media marketing endeavors. I also manage our blog, our BCA Storytellers and I organize our Photo Contest. If you are interested in collaborating or sharing your study abroad story through social media or by writing a blog, I am your connection! My favorite part in this role is working with students to share photos, stories, experiences and tips. Connect with me by following @BCAStudyAbroad or tag us #BCAStudyAbroad!

Q: What is your favorite travel memory?

A: It’s difficult to pick just one favorite memory, so I will say that my favorite memoriehave been around the table sharing a meal with hosts, host families, and/or friends around the world. These are moments when time slows down, the conversation gets a little deeper, new flavors are explored and connections are made. Everyone has to eat and one of the best ways to get to know a culture is through food!

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give a student thinking about studying abroad?

A: If you keep waiting for a better time, it will never happen. Embrace a “seize the moment” mentality from the beginning and you will have an amazing experience!

Q: Do you have any pets?

A: I am a crazy dog-mom and pet lover! Right now, I have three dogs which I rescued: Ogi the D.O.G. and Ranger are a native breed to North America called Carolina Dogs (aka American Dingo) and Brü is a Chihuahua/Jack Russel mix. They keep me busy and love to explore new places just like me!

Q: Did you study abroad?! If so, where and what inspired you to study abroad?

A: I studied abroad 3 times because I loved it so much! In high school, I spent a summer in France and a year in Bolivia through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. In college, I studied abroad with Semester at Sea aboard the MV World Odyssey. I would not have traded these experiences for anything and would go on a BCA program today if I were still in college!

Q: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

A: Mint Chocolate Chip (not the fake green colored stuff) – it’s refreshing and delicious!

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I am a avid hobby-enthusiast. What does that mean? Essentially, I like to try new experiences. Currently, I am perfecting my disc golf game, learning to throw pottery, finally reading for enjoyment, exploring the eastern United States, testing my ability to paddle board, finding my inner peace through yoga and meditation, and training my dogs in hand signals, English and French commands. To be honest, I’m not sure what free time is!

Q: Before you travel to a new place what research do you do to learn about the host community, local cultures or the impact of your visit?

A: I like to do some preliminary research before I visit a new country to make sure I’m following laws and cultural-norms. This can include topics like dining etiquette, dress, bathroom etiquette, greetings, etc.  I also like to scope locations out on social media to see the who-what-where of community life in XYZ country. Lastly, I like to try learn a few key words in my host country’s language. Numbers, restroom, train/bus, help, excuse me, thank you, and please are good places to start.
