BCA Dalian is located on the campus of Dalian University of Foreign Languages about 30 minutes from downtown, in the coastal region of the city (5 minutes from the beach).  The northern city of Dalian is located near the Liaoning Peninsula. Dalian is China’s most livable city according to China Daily.

Dalian University of Foreign Languages has 20,000 students total with 10,000 undergraduate students and 1,000 of those being international students.

There are about 30-40 students per class.

At the School of Chinese Studies, there are midterm exams and a final exam. Teachers are flexible in accommodating international students, using a variety of methods to help them succeed in through learning tools best for individual students.

For elective courses in the School of Chinese Studies, teaching methods vary based on subject matter. In courses like Traditional Chinese Paper Cutting, Traditional Calligraphy Writing, Traditional Musical Instrument Playing, Chinese Martial Arts, etc., learning is primarily done through hands on exercises and assessment is performance based. For non-arts electives where English is the teaching language, the teaching style and assessment are similar to American Universities.

There are plenty of immersion opportunities available for you in Dalian. Try joining a club, or see what festivals and competitions are on campus!

You will live in a single room in a co-ed dormitory with other international students, and you will be able to either cook for yourself in the dorm’s communal kitchen or grab food in the many restaurants and cafeterias around campus. You’ll also spend some weekend days with local families who will introduce you to different cultural activities and invite you to see their daily life! You will not stay overnight at the family’s home.

There are no internships set up through BCA for this program, although your resident director may have suggestions for you if you choose to seek one out on your own.

There are plenty of volunteering opportunities available such as teaching at an elementary school or tutoring Chinese peers in their English classes.

There is Wi-Fi on campus and in the dorms, but the Internet may be slow due to the number of people using it. There are also certain Internet restrictions that you must keep in mind when traveling to China. For example, many social media websites may be blocked, so you will have to find alternative ways to communicate prior to your departure. Skype is a great platform of communication!
