BCA encourages students to take advantage of learning opportunities both in and beyond the classroom!
Here is a current list of volunteer opportunities:
Neustadt Welcome Center-Volunteer Accompaniment for Refugees: A unique and challenging opportunity for BCA students wanting to gain first-hand experience and make a difference in the current refugee crisis. Volunteers will also receive training. This is an excellent opportunity for our students who study social work, international relations, peace and conflict studies, etc. The individual must be self-motivated and have a strong grasp of the language, as translation may be involved.
Seniorentreff Mittendrin (Senior Citizen Activities): Takes place the last Friday every month for around four hours in the afternoon. Excellent opportunity to connect with elderly persons (who surely have a lot to tell!) and spend meaningful time with them baking, singing, shopping, etc.
Visiting Hours: This opportunity is especially for students who are eager to get on the inside of the local community while also helping others. A pure exchange of time and contact, this opportunity deals with visiting people who are in need of contact (elderly, hospitalized, alone on a birthday, new to the area, etc.). Visits are coordinated and discussed in advance. Visits are generally once a month for around an hour, but of course there is flexibility.
Ekumenical Discussion Group: This is a discussion group for members of the Cappel Protestant Church and the St. Francis congregation, to talk about faith, religion, church, ethics, church history, art, literature, and music. Often in the form of presentation followed by discussion.
Basketball Treffpunkt: If you like basketball and want to meet locals who share your love for the game, this is a great starting point.
We are working to establish new volunteer opportunities all the time, so please let us know when completing your application if you are interested in volunteering while studying abroad. Once on site, your resident director will work with you to find a placement that fits your schedule and your goals, as well as the organization’s needs. Our hope is that your volunteering experience will be mutually beneficial for both you and the organization! BCA’s expectation is that students take their volunteering commitment seriously and demonstrate this by faithful attendance and communication with their organization.
