Burwood to Join BCA as Director of Academic Affairs

BCA is pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Burwood has been named the Director of Academic Affairs.


Born and raised in Exeter, England, Stephen earned degrees from the University of Warwick and the University of Sussex and continued his scholarly work with graduate degrees in American History at Binghamton University in New York.

Stephen brings broad experience in many aspects of higher education around the world. He has held professorial positions both in the United States and Great Britain and has years of experience developing study abroad programs and negotiating institutional agreements with international partners. In his previous positions, he worked collaboratively with administrators and faculty to address funding models, create and implement study abroad policies, establish a study abroad advisory committee and direct program reviews and assessment.

Stephen has held international education positions at Eastern Michigan University, SUNY-Cortland and SUNY-Geneseo. As the Assistant Provost for International Affairs at the State University of New York at Geneseo, Stephen dramatically expanded international programming which included developing exchange, study abroad and faculty-led programming and steering the establishment of undergraduate dual-degree programs with universities in Russia, Turkey and Mexico. He also initiated Geneseo’s first international service-learning program (in Nicaragua), international teaching programs and teaching practice programs (in Ghana and England).

In addition to his intense commitment to internationalizing the American university, Stephen remains an active researcher and writer and is the author or editor of nine books and approximately twenty-five articles, mainly in American history.

In his role as Director of Academic Affairs, Stephen will focus on strengthening the academic components of existing BCA programs, as well as guiding BCA in the development of new program opportunities.

Stephen will begin his role with BCA on June 16 and will be relocating to Elizabethtown from Delhi, New York.
